Any of you that are involved in sports, outdoor hobbies, or work out a lot are considered to have an active lifestyle. It's good to know that you don't have to sacrifice piercings because of this!
In this blog, I'm going to share with you several things to consider, as well as a few tips to help you along your journey of having/healing healthy piercings.
An active lifestyle and healthy diet will actually help your piercings heal! Your body is a whole, and when it's healthy even your piercings will notice a difference. Make good choices and they will thank you.
It is important to remember that a piecing is a wound, so you need to thoroughly clean it after sweating or you may expose it to unwanted bacteria that could cause complications. You don't need to do anything fancy, just rinse your piercings with water in the shower and spray them well with saline spray when you get out!
If you're playing any contact sports, you should not get any new piercings. I got my forward helix and conch pierced right before I joined the wrestling team- and that was a BIG mistake. I do not have any of those piercings now as my forward helix got ripped (yikes!) and my conch never healed! If you play a contact sport and have healed piercings, you will be fine. Just be sure to remove your jewelry and clean/replace it after the activity. I made this mistake also and ended up almost having the hoop ripped out of my cartilage one day at practice! 😬
My sister plays softball and got her cartilage pierced during the season. She is a catcher so she has to rip off her helmet often, and this resulted in her cartilage piercing having an unsightly bump and taking longer to heal. If you play any sports where anything comes in contact with your ear its best to wait until the off season to get pierced and give your body plenty of time to heal!
There's no reason to be scared of getting piercings just because you're active! You just need to take care with your timing and cleaning practices.
