Piercings are open wounds, and open wounds should be kept clean and sanitary to avoid infection! This task is as simple as LITHA and a routine aftercare system, but there is much misinformation all around the internet about certain products that should not ever be put on your piercings. (For more details on perfect aftercare check this page!)
One sneaky substance is one of woman's favorite- makeup!
If you wear makeup you should be super careful not to cover your facial or ear piercings when you apply it. If you have to put makeup on or very near your piercing, clean it off very well afterward, making sure to leave no trace of makeup in your piercing. Old makeup can harbor all kinds of bacteria and cause many issues, but it is something most piercing connoisseurs never think about!
Last month I came across a person on Facebook giving advice to another person about how to get rid of a piercing bump. Her advice was to put Windex on the bump! No type of harsh chemical like Windex should ever be put onto your skin in any fashion, much less on an irritated open wound! This goes to show that you should not take piercing advice from strangers with no credibility on Facebook.
As a child, we were all told to use the alcohol solution given to us by Claire's after we got our ears stabbed with a piercing gun! 😆 It is now common information that piercing guns are awful and alcohol is not beneficial for your piercing. Alcohol, especially when used daily, dries out your skin. Naturally, your body produces certain oils that are essential for a smooth healing process!
Another infamous and incorrect tip suggests to crush up aspirin and mix it with water and then smother the piercing in the resulting paste. According to Science Daily, Aspirin actually delays skin healing when it is put on a wound! That's the opposite of what we ideally want to do when we have a fresh piercing. If you ask any piercing lover if they want to extend the healing process every single one would undeniably say NO!
Many of these wrongful claims can be easily myth busted with some googling and the use of reputable information sources. You can totally ask for advice online, but you should always do your own research as well as contact a professional and take their opinion into account as well! Then you will be fully informed and ready to make the best decision for you and your piercing ☺️
