As with everything in life there are certain risks involved when getting a new piercing, but if you visit a clean and reputable piercer these risks will be mitigated and you will not likely have any issues at all!
The risks include infection, allergic reactions, and bleeding.
When you get a piercing you should not bleed for very long- maybe an hour at the most! After that your piercing will begin to heal itself.
If you go to a shady piercing shop or do not do your aftercare correctly you may experience an infection. It's important to note that actual infections with bacterial presence in piercings is very rare. Most often when people say their piercing is "infected" it's really just irritated. You can learn the difference in this blog.
You will only have an allergic reaction to your new piercing if a) you are severely allergic to nickel or b) your piercer uses low quality jewelry that is plated to put in your initial piercing. Initial piercings do best with 316L surgical steel, implant grade titanium, or solid gold. You can read more about what materials are best suited for your piercings here.
Pretty much the only other risks involved are if the piercing migrates (again caused by improper care or bad piercers) or if you decide you don't like it after getting it! 😊
Piercings are a great for of self expression and you definitely shouldn't be afraid to get one, but take care to find a reputable piercer before diving in ✨
