Misconceptions are a part of life, and piercings are no exception. One of these myths that surround piercings that may be preventing you from getting your next one! We don't want that, so this week we are busting those myths!
#1: PIERCINGS DONE AT TATTOO SHOPS ARE ALWAYS SAFE
This is NOT always true guys, always be sure to check into the piercer before getting a piercing at a different shop! Whether it is a tattoo or a piercing only shop, do your research first. Low prices usually equal poor quality, and that will cost you more in the end than finding and sticking (literally π€£) with a reputable piercer!
#2: INFECTIONS ARE COMMON
Believe it or not, it is very rare for a piercing to really be infected. Most often what people call "infection" is either a temporary bump, or the fluid that normally comes with healing a piercing! Don't let infection scare you away. Working with a great piercer you will be 100% safe and if you do happen to get an infection they will coach you through it!
#3: PIERCING GUNS ARE SAFE AND STERILE
I've said it a million times (but hey, who's counting?) and I will continue to say it- PLEASE do not use piercing guns, especially for a cartilage piercing. Piercing gins are nasty, and bust a hole through your ear instead of removing the skin/cartilage to make room for the piercing. Β
#4: DERMALS ALWAYS MIGRATE AND/OR REJECT
Dermal piercings can be scary, but migration/rejection should not be a fear! It is a common misconception that all dermal piercings will migrate and/or reject. If you have a good piercer, quality jewelry, and proper aftercare you will heal up beautifully and be in l-o-v-e with your new adornment!
#5 PIERCINGS CAN PARALYZE YOU
Guys. Piercings do not go through any central nerves, so they can not possibly paralyze you!
#6: PIERCINGS ARE TEMPORARY
Piercings aren't temporary, they're meant to be kept for years and years! After having a piercing for over a year, it will be hard for the body to heal up the hole, and once it does heal up, you'll most likely still have a mark in that area.Β
#7: YOU CANNOT BREAST FEED AFTER YOU HAVE OR HAVE HAD NIPPLE PIERCINGS
This one really floors me guys. Nipple piercings do not affect your ability to breast feed! No, you probably don't want to breast feed with jewelry in if it is painful for you or the baby, but if not, there is no reason to ditch your gems!
#8: OINTMENTS & ALCOHOL HELP WITH HEALING
Putting either alcohol or ointment on your piercings is a BIG no-no! The alcohol dries the piercing up too much so that it cannot heal properly. Ointment can cause dust and other particles to get stuck to the piercing and actually aids with infection! Stick to saline sprays, or anti-bacterial soap mixed with warm water!
